Greystone Gewurztraminer
Musk | Rose-petal
Vineyard: Greystone Wines
Vintage: 2011
Varietal: Gewurztraminer
Country: New Zealand
Region: Waipara Valley

Light golden straw in colour, an intense and pure nose of musk, rose-petal and spice leaps from the glass.  the palate is medium in sweetness with rich and expressive spice and floral characters shining through leading to a long and poised finish of fine acidity.  A wine to match cuisine, or enjoy as an exotic aperitif.

Winemakers notes

Viticulturist's Notes The Greystone Gewurztraminer grows on the Western end of a North-West facing block on gentle slopes that enjoy good heat accumulation, but also experience the cool nights of a Waipara Valley summer.  the 2010/11 season was slightly cloudier that 'normal' and some noble-rot resulted.

Density 2500 vines/Ha on two-cane VSP trellising.

Winemaker's Notes A small percentage of noble rot Botrytis was included in the harvest, adding weight and texture to the wine.  We crushed the fruit by foot to extract phenolics and flavours before pressing to tank for settling.  A cool fermentation in tank and a small percentage in French oak provides a lovely combination of varietal flavours with subtle complexity.  this wine will open up considerably over the following 6 years.

Date of Harvest 15 April 2011

Brix at Harvest 25

pH 3.84

Our tasting notes

19 January 2012

I could sit around in the summer afternoon sun and sniff this wine forever.   But eventually the temptation to taste is overwhelming and poof somehow it has disappeared!  How did that happen.. back for another glass.

The abundant nose is of rose-petals and musk and a hint of banana bread.   The palate is more restrained than expected after that amazing floral display with light spice, florals, minerality, and lychee.  There was a small percentage of noble rot Botrytis to this wine which has given the mouthfeel more weight and texture.
