12000 Mile Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Easy drinking and approachable style, showing lifted aromatics and some tropical notes underpinned by pungency. The palate is quite broad and a tangerine note is discernable. Friendly acidity leaves this refreshing.

Alpha Zeta Garganega 08 (Verona)

Garganega is the principal component of Soave, but can be made into a single varietal wine to good effect. On the nose this wine reminds me of that yummy lemon and pistachio shortbread that Pandoro makes overlaid with light florals. It’s dry on the palate though, with a slightly oily texture and fresh finish. And it’s priced so you can afford to be experimental!

Leave all your presumptions at the door! Exotic and mysterious, complex and heady, this is not just any Savvy. Musky honeysuckle, passionfruit, honey and a smoky minerality all take their turn, and the palate is opulently textured and mouthfilling. I have a feeling this will be one of this year's most memorable wines for me!

Auntsfield 2010 Sauvignon Blanc

This is a timemachine wine. Within the first sniff, the first sip, you are transported to that better, warmer, place. It screams Marlborough, but it does so in the voice of an angel. This is one fantastic Sav. Tropical fruits, tomato stalk on the nose, prepare the palate for a balanced and mouth filling body. Gentle minerality evens out the texture, and the delicate citrus elements even things out and linger beautifully. Fantastic heritage wine.

Big Sky Sauvignon Blanc 2011 (Martinborough)

Big Sky is a small boutique winery on Te Muna Road in Martinborough by winemakers Katherine Jacobs and Jeremy Corban.

This wine is a refreshing Martinborough style Sauvignon Blanc with stone fruit and citrus on the nose.  The palate is dry with blood orange and grapefruit notes and a lingering spicy finish.    It matched well with today's lunch of Indian Samosas.

Waxy citrus, apples and blossoms on the nose with a hint of honey. Off-dry, but with a refreshing granny smith apple tartness on the palate.

Black Estate Riesling 09

A great example of the classy Rieslings coming from Waipara these days, the nose is an invigorating blend of floral notes and sherbetty citrus with a drizzle of honey. Beautiful clean fruit on the palate with a slightly waxy texture and long crisp finish.

Black Estate Riesling 2008 - Waipara

Oh we do love Waipara Riesling! Back in store, we have Omihi producer, Black Estate with a delectable style all full of orange blossom, nougat, ginger and lemon curd on the nose. These characters spill onto the palate which is fairly full-bodied and unctuous. I haven't chilled this (it's a cold day after all), and as such, the lovely perfumed notes and the splash of residual sugar of this wine, zing around the mouth, making one's spirits feel positively lifted! Tasted in delight today by Nicola
