The Doctors' Riesling 2011
Green Apple | lime | Off-dry
Vineyard: The Doctor's
Vintage: 2011
Varietal: Riesling
Country: New Zealand
Region: Marlborough

Now assuming cult status in the New Zealand wine scene the Doctors’ Riesling continues to amaze wine critics and novices alike. Grown on our stony Condors bend vineyard at Renwick the fruit ripens slowly, in Marlborough’s cool dry autumn climate, gaining flavour intensity yet retaining all important acidity. Harvested early at low sugars the grapes are gently pressed, cold settled and given a cool slow fermentation which was arrested around 8.5% alcohol and 42g/l residual sugar. The final decision on when to stop the wine fermentation is very much decided on acid/sugar balance.

Winemakers notes

Our latest Doctors’ Riesling shows those signature lime sherbet, granny smith apple, mandarin flavours and refreshing taste that have made it such an appealing wine. On the palate aromas of citrus, apricots & Asian spice, lovely fruit sweetness, balanced by fine acidity and the wines naturally lower alcohol, 8.5%, ensure each mouthful is a refreshing delicious experience. Perfect on a summers day or as I’ve discovered, the perfect palate cleanser at the end of an evening.

Our tasting notes

21 January 2012

Continuing the New Zealand Summer of Riesling celebration, we must feature John Forrest's The Doctors' Riesling!  This is one of Wineseeker's favourite rieslings.

This refreshing wine is a great summer aperitif with low alcohol (8.5%) and balanced natural fruit sweetness with fine acidity.  Lovely nose of lime sorbet and dried apricots, citrus, and green apple flavours on the palate.

This is a beautifully constructed wine with a crunch of crisp apple, dried apricot and spice balanced with brisk acidity. The modest alcohol means you can enjoy almost with inpunity! This will be open through the day.

Wine Awards

Raymond Chan Wine Reviews - Dec 2011 – “One of the highly regarded of the Mosel Kabinett style Rieslings in New Zealand. Fruit from the ‘Conders Bend' site, hand-picked and cool-fermented to 8.5% alc. and 42 g/L rs. Brilliant, very pale straw-yellow colour with pale green hues, this has a delicate and refined nose of limes, jasmine florals and honeysuckle that unfolds in the glass. Medium sweet, this is a light-bodied wine with good concentration of tantalising flavours of lime juice, white florals and honey forming a good core and palate line. The acidity is discreet, resulting in a finely textured, subtly dry mouthfeel and a driven, linear and direct finish with lingering floral and mineral notes. Still youthful and primary, this should soften to become richer and more nuanced over the next 4-5 years. Match with Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese cuisine 4,000 cases made.” 18.0-/20

"Quite a sweet Riesling although the sweetness is balanced by strong, fruity acidity giving only a slightly sweet finish. Pristine and pure wine with energy and a deliciously nervous tension." Bob Campbell MW – 90 Points, December 2011

"Becoming almost a cult wine, this oozes peach, pineapple, lime and citrus and is medium sweet with an attractive delicacy and a well-balanced, crisp finish." Otago Daily Times, Nov, 2011 Charmain Smith - 4 STARS
